If I were another kind of woman (and this were a different kind of forum) the title "Strappy Leather" would be on a totally different kind of post,....

My question is this, what is the difference among the different leather strap type implements? Is there a difference between a belt, a schoolhouse strap (or whatever you call it), a shaving strap, a tawse, etc? I know they look different but is there a vast difference between the feelings? Is there a noticable difference between leather straps of different widths and thicknesses? How much wider does it have to be to make a difference?

We've got belts of various thicknesses and hardnesses (degrees of wear) but they are all about 1 inch wide and they are all (obviously) not split. So I am wondering if it would be worth it to try to find the leather to make, say a two inch strap or a 1/2 inch strap or a split strap or whatever.

I have some ideas which seem fascinating in my head, but if one leather implement is very like another, I can put my creative energy somewhere else, you know? Any thoughts from those of you more experienced with the leather implements? Any input is always appreciated!

Thanks,

Thick ones definitely are thuddier and more paddle-like in my opinion whereas the lighter ones are more sting, as is true with split ones.
I'm sorry, but not as sorry as I'm gonna be.

All leather is different. Depending on the thickness and width and density of the leather. The schoolhouse strap or ruler strap from London Tanners is very narrow an inch I think and it is pretty thick and the leather is very dense and stiff. It is very intense, translation: it hurts like a son of a bitch! But it's one of those love/hate things, you know? Wider leather is my favorite, it fires up a larger area and tends to be not so stingy as narrow leather. My favorite in that width is London Tanners' Reformatory Strap. Tawses are narrow therefore very intense, stingy and two of them at the same time, it's very interesting! If you want to try to make your own strap, go to a Tack Store and check out the leather pieces they have. There are a couple of pieces that are just nice long plain leather, no buckles or anything to cut off and you can probably make two out of one of the strips there, we did. The piece we got is 1 3/4" wide. Have you checked out London Tanners' straps? The Reformatory Strap is just the right weight for just that right amount of thud, too.

I bought two great belts at a out door market for $7. each, one is over 2 " wide, nice and thick, and they can make you dance.

A leather implement that I love is a quirt. It makes a loud whippy sound, but the intensity is much less than the sound. It is great for warming up. And depending on the application, it could be more intense. It is floppy which is wht it makes such a great sound.
It's all a matter of perspective
