I wanted to ask y'all's opinion about something I'm working on. I'd like to start a chat room for Den members. It would only be open on specified days during certain hours and only registered Den members will be allowed entrance.
The discussion's here at the Den will continue as always but once or twice a week the chat room will be open for us to converse in real time. I think it will give us a chance to get to know each other better and improve communication here on the Den.
Also, if in chat someone would like to get into a subject more deeply but wasn't sure how to start it, we can bring it over to the Den and start a new discussion to get more input.
The only thing I worry about are side jokes or "in" comments from those who participate which make other members feel left out because they didn't make it over to the chat room. I don't want that sort of thing developing because it can separate the members into "cliques" and this isn't high school, ya know.
I'd like the chat room to be a social area where members can get to know each other more personally. It can be a place where people who don't normally post on the forum can become more familiar with the other members and maybe that will give them the extra push they need so they'll feel more comfortable and become active on the board.
I aready have a site and now all I have to do is download the software and get it set up. I'd just like to know what y'all thought and if something like this would be of interest to any of you.

I think that sounds like a really good idea although being the other side of the pond as they say your hours probably won't coincide with our time difference if you want to have it open to the majority of Den members which I assume are US based. One thing I will mention about chats is the danger of having 'weirdos' (non-spanking weirdos that is) trying to get in on the act. I also post on a British site and they have chat rooms but it seems to me that neither that nor the threads are monitored in any great way regarding offensive content. In the chat there they also have an option of pc's (private chats - just made that abbreviation up) between two people and you get a lot of people on asking all sorts of personal questions. I'm sure you've taken all this sort of thing into account, but I thought I'd mention it anyway.

Gypsygirl, the reason I'm setting this up as I am is to avoid the "weirdo" factor. The only way you get into the chat room is if you're a Den member and you've been approved by one of us. The chat room will only be open during certain times which will be when at least one of the moderators (normally me) will be there to oversee the chat. That way any offensive behavior will be met with a quick reaction.
The software I'm using has alot of safety features to avoid as much of the problems you've brought up as possible. This isn't going to be run by a random chat service, this is going to be set up on one of my domains with chat software I'm purchasing. I'll have total control.
As for times, that's one of the things I'll need input on. Are weekends a good time? Say we pick noon Pacific time to start; it will be 2pm Central time, 3pm on the East Coast, and 8pm London time. Would that work? |

oh darn...weekends (now that the weather is nice) are spent hiking with Hubby - but I think this would be a great addition to your site Bethie (especially since it will be monitored so closely). In my past experiences, with chat rooms, most ppl who knew each other PRIOR to the chat site (maybe from other sites or from real life) often kept the conversation going, but "newcomers" were also invited to chat. As long as everyone is made to feel welcome, and cliques don't form, I think its worth a try

I think this idea may work out well, Bethie, especially for when someone wants instant feedback. Of course I can help you moderate, and I will be known to say "Don't make me come in there!!!!" I am quite good at that.
Plus, if it doesn't work out, there is always that delete button.

I almost hate to admit this but how does a chat room work. I never visted one so I am very much a newbie on this.
Also would invites go out or will it be a set time on the week ends

Red you are in for a treat!! I OP in a spanking chat room and have for a few years now. It is sort of like here...but you are all in a "room" and you can read what everyone is saying when they say it...you don't have to "post" it. It can be great fun!!! Bethie a chat sounds fantastic and I don't think any specific topir persay needs to be preset. People will chat and come just as they post on the site. Moreover it will be more interactive because it's a chat. I think weekends would be great. Good stuff and great idea! I think it's a great idea.

I will help too of course, as much as I can. I think we could do other times as well as weekends...say one weekday morning and once in the evening? That would give more people the opportunity to join in.

I like the idea of a chatroom as long as it is moderated. Spent a few years on the undernet myself, Ladygator. Enjoyed it mostly, did run into a few wacko's but usually was a lot of fun. Excellant idea, Bethie. I work weekends so they won't work for me so Wolfie's idea of having some alternate days and times sounds great!

I gave that time schedule as an example. I think we'll set up different times for the room to be open depending on who's available to moderate. I'm still working on that but I definitely appreciate you volunteering Ladygator and I'm sure we can use you. Thanks! And thanks to you as well, Wolfie!
I'll announce times and all Den members will be welcome. I'll set up an area that will only be visible to members who are logged in and they will enter the chat room from there. I'll probably password protect it as well.
Alot of this is still in the working so I don't have all the final answers yet. I'll keep y'all updated and keep the feedback coming!

I think your idea is a great one!
I've also been an OP in spanking chats. I usually use my mIRC program because it's easier to use when needing to boot, block, ban or warn off the wierdos and you can privately chat with other OP's without the general chatters seeing.
Not to mention my vast amount of spanking popups.
Being on the "other side of the pond" and not being employed, I would be available to help you if you needed.
May I suggest a schedule of chatting times that would be available to your international members and also for the members in the states to join in as well.
It would be so much fun to be able to chat with everyone.

Great idea! We had a chat room on World Spanking Forum and people really made friends. I work at home a lot and go online then, which is not when most people are online. Weekends and evenings are not good for me, so I very infrequently went to the WSF chat. BUT when I did it was fun. Usually it was just mundane topics ... and also witty reparte about spanking. The chat room thing is kinda annoying though, if a lot of people are in the room b/c everyone is typing at once and so it's not a linear conversation. Also, it can get dull if people take a long time to respond. But, I have had fun on the nights when I come home from work late and M is in bed and I have to unwind.

It will take a little time to get this set up on my server and I'm working on two other projects as well, but we're hoping to have it going by next weekend. It just depends on our tech guys and how quickly they get onto the support ticket.
As for the rooms, I haven't quite decided how that's going to work yet. But I'm going to talk it all over with my chat room mods before we get going.
Also, I want to stress this next point: The same rules will apply in the chat room that apply here in the Den. It's very important that everyone understand that the chat room is an extension of this forum and will be run just like the board.
The chat room will be for members to get to know each other a little better and I expect it the conversations to be civil. If someone becomes obnoxious or rude they will be booted from the room. Also the chat room will not become a cyber play area, that's not what we're setting it up for.
Shylah, thank you for volunteering! I'd planned to PM you to ask for your help so I'm glad you offered it. I really do need someone in your area for that time zone. I think your idea of scheduling chat times for international and stateside members is a great one. I'd wondered how to make it easier for y'all on the other side of the pond and that would be a start. Thanks, again!

Think it,s a great idea.I also have tentativly gone onto chat rooms and it felt like everybody knew everybody else and they all talked at the same time.At least here i hava an idea of who most of you are and already feel comfortable with ya.ll. |

I think that chat rooms are notorious for that Buenaventura, it's very hard to get a foot in the door and feel accepted as they tend to be 'clique'. The good thing about this one will be that we all 'know' each other already so the feeling of 'will I be accepted' doesn't apply. This site is a friendly group and are more than willing to say 'bienvenida'.

Okay, the tech guys were quick so I'm going to be working on the chat room getting it all personalized and stuff like that.
Any thoughts on what days or times would be good? We can have different times for different time zones depending on when mods are available. The only time the room will be available will be during announced times when a mod is available.
I'll be sending out PM's to my volunteer chat room mods soon. I'm going to be writing code though so it might not be real soon, depends on if my head explodes or not. |

Who's on the West Coast among us? Who's on the East Coast and who's in between? Who's in England? Am I leaving anyone out? Who's in Australia that's interested?
Now's the time to step out and let me know who's interested in chatting with us so I can try and figure out some kind of schedule. I know we can't all meet at the same time every time it's open, but I'd like to try to get as many of us together as often as possible.

I am interested, too, and I am in Germany, but I think that will go together pretty well with the times for the UK. One single hour doesn't make that much of a difference.
Just like the others I, too, think that a chatroom is a great idea, although it will be a little more difficult for me to contribute as I have to write in a foreign language. |

I agree with Chrissie, for those of us in diferent parts of Europe 1 hour either way won't effect us a lot. Presuming that everybody's normal snooze hours are not a good idea, there probably are only a few good 'windows' available. The times suggested previously (2pm Central time, 3pm on the East Coast, and 8pm London time) sound pretty good and cover most areas and weekends will probably be easier for most people who have to work during the week. Personally I get more access during the week than at the weekend when my son is about the place and not in school but that is my problem, and I think it's good to go with the majority and the rest of us can try to get there when we can.
Once you know who is available to act as mod at which times you'll more or less have your ideal hours set and we'll adapt to your settings. You can always move it about a bit as we go along if things don't work out.
