I have heard alot of people talking about a set number of swats. Like, 50 swats for doing this.. what is it about numbers? Why do you doms like it, and brats, which do you prefer, a set number or "flying blind"?? |

Both!! A set number of swats is nice and orderly to a top but when our brats push our buttons during a spanking we tend to view the set number as a bare (sic) minimum. I do like to end every spanking with at least a dozen smacks to the sit spot of each cheek.

We fly blind but a couple of times when I made too much fuss and he was just about to change to another implement he said OK NOW YOU GET 20 MORE FOR THAT!, which he proceeded to do with the same implement. It's different and kinda neat when he does that. |

We don't do numbers either. But if it's not a play spanking and more in the line of punishment, I can see that a set number would be an advantage to me. At least then I would know when it was coming to an end. Sort of like seeing the light at the end of the tunnel and know that the punishment will be over soon.
The Spice of Life is having my OWN WAY!! A spanking would be nice.

We usually only do set numbers for corrective spankings or for punishments, the rest of the time I have no idea how many I am getting. I enjoy not knowing, it can add to the excitement and fun.
I do agree with Ann tho, I want to know how many I am getting when I'm in trouble...so I know when to breathe a sigh of relief!  |

I don't give specific "amounts" of whacks, although I usually unconsciously do even numbers or sets divisible by ten. Usually I go until one of the following happens:
1. The bottom is a suitable color.
2. The sounds coming from the sub are suitably remorseful.
3. I think she's had enough.
I suppose if I was in a full-on spanking relationship, as opposed to a kink-friendly-but-not-required marriage, I would probably have certain amounts set up. Unfortunately, said amounts don't take into account "missed" strokes, or strokes that don't get the right kind of sound when hand (or paddle, more often) meets bottom.

No set numbers here, unless it's for accumulated misbehaviors (I have an aligator paddle and I'll sometimes say "that's one more aligator!" when Bethie runs away at WalMart or some such.)
However, one reason you see so many nice round numbers in porn is that there actually seems to be a subset of the spanking fetish that is a fetish for numbers! I'm not making this up. The counting, the 10, 20, 30, 40, it seems to have a special significance for some people. I once linked to a story on Spanking Blog that took this fetish to an extreme -- at one point the author had a dozen spankees in an auditorium and it was twenty each for this offense, forty each for that offense, all round numbers, all large numbers, repeated endlessly. Number fetish, I'm telling you. |

Dan has it nailed. Many tops like order and bratting is an inherent threat to order (or propiety). A set number of swats imposes order on the offending brat-or at leat on her bottom. For the subbie it can provide that light at the end of the tunnel. The standard "That will earn you a dozen more" is always useful to emphasize certain points.

Ummm my mouth is usually what gets me in trouble. I'm usually very sorry after the spanking begins. I'm ready to agree to just about anything he suggests. How long it lasts is another story though.

Sometimes during a spanking it occurs to me to wonder how many spanks I'm getting, but to count would just distract me--I once had a partner who was into the "One, sir. Two sir," etc., thing during a spanking. I always had a harder time letting go and enjoying it.
It's been mentioned that counting's more of a thing with more seriously D/s couples, which I have to agree with--I used to like the idea a *lot* more back in the days when I really wanted a Dom, rather than a kinky boyfriend. |

I agree with you, Lillith, counting is distracting. Plus part of the excitement is not knowing when it is going to end. Just when I think I can't take any more, I get pushed just a bit farther. Especially when there is a pause and you think the spanking is finished and you get surprised with more. |
