Spanking is quite popular!
Metro Times is advertised as being "Detroit's Weekly Alternative" Paper/Magazine, with articles, tons of ads, and info on the night life in the metro Detroit area.
They have a Dear Abby type advice column that's called "Savage Love," named after the columnist Dan Savage, that answers the questions posed. He enlists some advice from Midori, who I know mostly for her bondage, but he sez she a "famous sex educator, author, feminist and full-fledged, life-long female."

Interesting article. I looked at the cartoon, and I have two problems with it. First, the guy is sweating profusely and looks totally clueless. Second is the expression on the face of the lady in question – she looks less than enthusiastic. In fact, she looks as if she's standing downwind of a dead skunk!

I've seen men and women in scenes like this all the time. 
An unhealthy, overly excited man, getting ready to spank a woman that could care less about him, and the impending whack. A party sort of scene, in most cases, with a "okay, let's get it over with" attitude.
It's also..."just for entertainment purposes only," as I see it, and completely fits the article in question. It's about the disinterested partner, so I'd say the cartoon fits the situation.
Might be a fun idea to post some picture/cartoons, and develop a story around them. Do a "what do you 'see' in this picture" thread.

I think it appears trying to be too PC. An oversexed man and a woman who is bored. If there was any real excitement shown, it would be to upseting to the vanillas.

Good point Fanny, but this cartoon was in an alternate lifestyle paper, not a vanilla one. 
I think the guy is freaking out over the opportunity to whack that sexy bottom. She looks resigned to me. Of course, I wouldnt want to be smacked with a lightsaber either...when there are so many nicer toys to play with.
