My girlfriend wants to try a cane. We have been playing with spanking since we started dating and we are starting to raise the level of intensity. She wants something that will make and leave a mark for longer then a couple hours, maybe even breaking the skin.

While I have seen enough canes in videos and pictures, I have never seen one IRL. What is an cheap substitute for the "traditional" cane. We (well I) don't want to spend the money on a real cane until we at least try it out.

I have gotten pretty good at turning everyday items into implements of pleasure/pain. I actually like the challenge, although I think I need to get a real paddle.

Anyway, I have considered dowel sticks, but are they really an effective substitute? And if so, about what size should I get? Are there any other suggestions?

Also, I am not sure she understands the level of intensity that breaking the skin entails. I thought about a wire hanger, but that seems too intense and perhaps may cause damage. Is there maybe an instrument that might accomplish this without being too dangerous.

Finally, I really appreciate the environment here and the stress on consensual spanking.

Hardwood dowels are not good substitutes for a cane - they are too brittle and can break on impact with resulting sharp ends slicing deeply.

But switches - which are green wood and much more flexible are easy to obtain (except maybe in the middle of a city).
All you need to make a switch is a pen knife - and a tree or bush that sends out nice straight "suckers" which are thin (diameter of your pinkie finger) straight, smooth barked, single year growth that are about three feet long. Cut off, remove any small branches and twigs, whittle any resulting bumps smooth, and round the thinner end so it has no sharp edges. Take a few whacks at your own ass (starting slow) to get an idea of how it works. Use sparingly and work up the intensity slowly.

Switches dry out and become brittle too but their life can be extended by keeping the base in water or soaking them for 24 hours before use. They are ment to be more or less disposable.

Another substitute for a cane is the thicker (3/8" diameter) section of an inexpensive fiberglass fishing pole - remove the eyelets (and handle if prefered) make sure any sharp edges are sanded smooth (5 minute epoxpy is good to refinish anywhere you scuff up the surface.) This is more rigid and heavier than a rattan cane so again start slow and experiment. (On the subject of fishing poles, be careful with anything made of bamboo - again the problem is we only have acess to dried material which is brittle - and when bamboo shatters, if breaks lengthwise and the edged are litterally razor sharp)

You can also get poor quality (but cheap) rattan canes at a plant nursery where they are sold for plant supports - pick the best, sand smooth and soak them in water to restore some pliability - should be able to bend them to at least a 90 deg bend over the three foot length. These would do to experiment but are not going to last very long.

In general the thinner the object the more likely to welt and break the skin. This is offset though by thicker things being heavier so more monemtum = bruising. Most canes are in the 1/4" to 1/2" range at the business end. As usual the intensity is a strong function of impact velocity - double the speed quadruples the energy. A cane like implement can be used with rapid light tap-tap-taps, or spaced whistling strikes - that is up to the players involved - the only ones you have to please are yourselves!

Regards,
Peter

Wow, I am glad I asked before I tried a dowel stick.

We tried switches last time. I made her go outside and pick one out. After three failed attempts, I had to do it myself. I found a nice one growing near the base of the tree. I am guess these are the "suckers" you are talking about. I will try to find some longer, older ones.

So a rattan cane should be able to bend 90 deg? I didn't realize they were so pliable. I guess that means I have to be careful about the end wrapping around the leg. (A discovery from the switch incident)

I really like the fishing rod idea because of theh built in handle, but I think I want to find something a little flimsier.

I asked my girlfriend which one she wanted to try...she said "All of them." =) We'll see...
