Hi all and Happy New Year to you all! We have used a small and wide crop, and split leather tawse. I like them but was wondering if there is any kind of wider leather strap implement with a handle? Maybe 4" wide by 5 or 6" long? If so, is there a name for it? Something like a bat paddle but square or rectangular? Thanks for you help.

I made mine up myself with the help of a shoemaker.I did the cutting and he did the sewing.it,s 6 inches wide and about 10 inches long.At the haft you make 2 cuts and make a circle with the 2 cut ends then glue them together with a piece of round wood insidethat,s the handle.Works really well!A little loud dear but you,ll like it I think. |

Thanks BV! Now why didn't I just think to ask you straight out? I think I would enjoy it. We'll try your suggestion. We didn't even think of a shoe repair place for the sewing. Great thinking! Hubby traps here in Alaska and has tons of beautiful tanned furs. He is thinking of putting fur on the reverse side. Make it all soft and pertty on the flip side....probably the side I'll never feel. ha ha But maybe if I'm good.

My best (and preferred) strap is a razor strop which can be bought from a barber supply house thru the internet. It is about 3 inches wide and long enough to make at least two or three short ones. For a handle I used the handle from a scraper bought at a hardware store which already had a slot cut in it. Just removed the blade.
The only question to be addressed is how thick the leather should be and if you have your own hides you should have lots of choices.

We have a leather paddle that has a fur side...................mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

The wide leather strap with a handle is called a "prison strap." Stockroom has them, so do others ..............
I recommend using neatsfoot oil to keep them supple. |

Nd2bspanked, could you clarify those measurements, please? A 4 inch width sounds reasonable but I was confused by the length. Did you mean 5 - 6 inches or feet?
Inches sounded too short and feet sounded rather long. But then, I'm just a little over 5 feet so that may be why I think that. I'm not sure I'd want a strap longer than I'm tall!  |
