So...to make a long story short, the vet put my big kitty on anti-anxiety medication to see if I can permanently retrain his behavior (so he stops peeing on the kitchen counter, etc.). Has anyone else tried this? Did it work.
Kitty seems fine so far, if extremely mellow....

I need to know a little more before I comment on this Reader girl. What other symptoms of anxiety is he showing other than peeing on the counter? Neutered male? How old? Are there changes in the household since right before he began doing this...divorce, new baby, another cat, death in family?
The medication shouldnt hurt him, but it doesnt really fix the problem either. If he's a young cat will he be on these meds the rest of his life? Have you talked to a behavioral specialist as well?

Hey Wolfie! He's a 6-year-old neutered male with no big changes in his life. The vet took me through a really long questionaire about litter boxes, etc. and said I'm doing exactly what the experts say to do (I did my research.)
Cleo has always been a 'territorial marker', but up to now it's always been by the front door or the back door. He recently started peeing on the kitchen counter. I did some research and got worried that he might have some kind of infection, so I took him to the vet. Apparently he's extremely healthy.
The vet said to try to retrain him to use the litter box while he's on this medication for 30 days, then we'd see what happens if we take him off the medication.

Sounds like your doing all the right things Reader girl. Are you using something like "Natures Miracle" to kill the odor as well as the stain? If all the smell isnt gone (his nose is very sensitive) he will go back to the same spots again and again. Never use a cleaner that has ammonia in it...just like urine does.
You could try confining him to a small room with a litter box when your not home to supervise him, the least amount of "accidents" the better. And I use wide strips of double-sided sticky tape on the counters to break the habit of jumping up there. Cats hate the feel of stepping on the tape, it lightly pulls the hairs on the bottoms of their feet. Ive had really good luck with this trick...using it to keep cats off furniture, from scratching where they shouldnt, and even from getting into plants.

I do use Nature's Miracle. That stuff is wonderful.
I like the double sided sticky tape idea. I'll have to hunt around for some wide size, I only have the really narrow kind.
Is that your kitty?

try feliway, it work for me, it seem to discourage cats from area they pee in; you may also need a new or additional litter box. |

We have a female kitty and are having problems with her "going" in places she shouldn't, like a pile of clothes in the bathroom. (Granted she was in the bathroom :D but ya know) She would also pee on the bathroom rug, we bought a new rug and just put the old one under her litter box hoping that the smell would attract her toward her litter box, instead of peeing in the bathroom. Is there anything else I could do? She is spayed, so I'm not really sure why she's doing this.
Also, she has been getting cramps or something in her back leg, because she'll hop down off the couch, or just stand up, and be limping for a second then be fine.. but the other day she limped and plopped down, and started whining, well, when I picked her up and moved her back leg.. (very gently) it popped. Should I be concerned??

Kryssi, sometimes new smells can cause cats to pee where they shouldnt. Have you changed detergents or added fabric softener she's not used to? Smelly, sweaty clothes are especially attractive to some cats. Remember, anything with ammonia in it will smell like urine to cats...never use cleaners with ammonia in them.
As for the hip problem...I would definitely worry. Cats are now being diagnosed with hip dysplasia, a serious disorder. Even if it isnt as serious as that, I would have her checked out to rule out arthritis, dysplasia, and other joint disorders. Maybe all she needs is a supplement to help her joints or ligaments, like glucosamine?
Let me know what you find out.

I myself know from personal experience what hip displasia feels like, (all explained in my blog) being born without a hip socket, my hip is known to slip every once in a while. I will make a vet appointment for her within the next week and we'll find out.
I'll keep you posted.

Hey,
thought i'd jump in about this. the only thing i can think of is if your kitty started marking before he was fixed then it won't stop. once they start.. there's no turning back.
i've got an almost five yro female cat who was fix when she was still little and she, for some reason, doesn't use the litter box. We think it's because her mommy and daddy were sister and brother. (don't ask). anyways they say to not scold them when they do it. If he's an outside cat it may be because of that also. If he's an indoor cat try to use different things for litter like newspaper or even regular dirt. I don't know, it may work.
