There are four people that need to walk across a bridge in the
middle of the night to get to the other side. Only two people
can cross the bridge at a time and they have only 1 flashlight,
which they all must use to cross the bridge. They need to cross
the bridge and have all four people on the other side in 17
minutes. One person can cross the bridge in 1 minute, another
person can cross the bridge in 2 minutes, another in 5 minutes
and the other in 10 minutes. How do all four people get across
the bridge in 17 minutes using 1 flashlight?
(No, you cannot
throw the flashlight across the bridge for the other two people
to use to cross over.)

Denote the people by numbers equal to the crossing times. Times denote cumulative time to end of each action listed.
1 and 2 cross - 2 minutes,
1 returns - 3 minutes
5 and 10 cross - 13 minutes
2 returns - 15 minutes
1 and 2 cross - arriving at 17 minutes. |

The first two people to cross the bridge are the 1 and 2 minute walkers, so that takes 2 minutes
The 1 minute walker recrosses the bridge and gives the 5 & 10 minute walkers the flashlight. Now you are at 3 minutes.
The 5 and 10 minute walkers cross the bridge with the flashlight, now 13 minutes have passed.
The 2 minute walker takes the flashlight back over the bridge (at 15 minutes)
The 1 minute and 2 minute walkers cross the bridge with the flashlight and now all 4 are across the bridge at 17 minutes.
