I just wondered how many members are animal lovers. I love any type of animal. My mom tells me we should fence in our 2 acres of land and turn all of our animals loose.
A few years ago we started out with just one kitten and one dog. Now we have 7 to 10 cats/kittens on the yard, 15 rabbits of assorted breeds, one inside dog (which thinks he is a person), 7 pgymy goats, 1 male turkey, several chickens and now two pigs.
One pig is mine as a pet and the other pig was purchased for eating purposes. My brother in law wants fresh sausage, bacon, and fatback. YYUUCCKKK
Both pigs are in the same pen and I just know I am going to get attached to both of them. So in Jan or Feb when it comes to time to butcher the pig I will feel horrible. I guess I am just too sensitive. I don't think I could eat any animal on the yard. If I have to feed/water and deal with it, I sure as heck can't eat it.

Cheeky, you certainly have a whole farm going on. I love animals as well, and I agree with you about not being able to eat one of your "children" I guess I was never meant to be a country girl.

Fanny,
I am suppose to be a county girl. :-(
Even growing up I didn't like to eat anything that was butchered on the yard. My parents had chicken and I loved eating my mom's chicken until I realized it wasn't coming out of the supermarket freezer. :-)
She decided to have chicken for Sunday dinner and that Saturday killed some chickens. I happen to witness it and sure enough unless I seen the disposed wrapping of bought chicken I would not eat chicken.
My mom would laugh when I asked her " Is this yard chicken or bought chicken?"

Om my you have lots of little babies! I myself love babies but am an especially fond of cats. I rescued 2 kittens 3 weeks ago, have bottle-fed them, and have weaned them onto dry food; they will be 7 weeks on Sunday.

I placed a clip of them playing - it's really cute.

Cheeky - you could start your own zoo!! LOL...We only have 1 dog (a golden retriever/chow mix) and 1 very old cat.

Sorry cat lovers (and I know there are a lot of you here)......but I am not a fan of the feline persuasion - this cat belonged to my son - who decided to move 1800 miles away!! LOL~~ No way could the cat go with him, so.....here he is! Guess I will have to pass on your offer about those kittens Tammy

Hey Cheeky have you thought of making goat milk cheese?Iagree on how hard it is to slaughter any animal you,ve raised.Years ago in my Hemingway days I agreed with him that youshould always be able to kill what you eat but after I slaughtered a goat I lost my enthusiasm for it.When I went hunting it didn,t bother me but probably for the same reason bomber pilots have no problems.I,t long distance killing.Think I,m hijacking the thread.Sorry!

Buenaventura,
Haven't given a single thought to making goat milk cheese. My goats are pgymys, not dairy goats. Or at least I don't think you milk pgymys. I know my brother doesn't.

I know what you mean about hunting. It doesn't bother me to help Grizz gut, skin, and process deers, squirrells, or even doves.
I think it is ironic, for years Grizz paid to be in hunting clubs that were up to 50 miles away from us, and always wanted his own land to hunt on. Now that we have two acres of hunting land he is able to hunt due to bronchitis. It flares up every hunting season and doesn't go away until a month after hunting season.
