Well, my friggin computer has crashed.

I have to use my hubbys puter which is SLOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

And I can't get to any of my pics to post.

All I did was run a spyware program and now it won't conntect to the broadband...not for NOTHING

So there it sits. It boots up ok but just WILL NOT connect!

Can't figure out why. Don't have the know-how to get it going. And don't have the money to get someone to fix it. Dang server people are no help.

Dammit anyways.

shylah,
I know how frustrating that can be. I will pray for your co,puter problems to work themselves out. Maybe if you threaten it with a good spanking, sometimes that gets me motivated to straighten up and fly right.

I have another thought sometimes area votech schools over discounted fees for the students to do the work. Maybe this would fit your budget better.

He used to be a computer nerd...so maybe he will have a couple of suggestions.

Hey Shylah -- what exactly is wrong with it? Do you get an error message? Give us some details... maybe someone will be able to help.

Apparently some drivers got deleted with the spyware.

Question: how do you find the Program Manager?

I know they make those books for dummies...do they make one for "Totally Stupid People Who Mess Up Their Computer And Can't Fix It"?

We tried to delete the spyware program and it won't go! How do you delete something that refuses to be deleted?

I have a headache.

You are NOT a stupid person...so don't go there!!!

Take an asprin take a break...we can figure this out!!

Yes we did use the add/remove and it won't remove it

That was the first thing we tried. Then we tried the uninstall option on the start menu and that didn't work either

SIGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Ok... so the computer boytfriend says:

There are 2 ways:
Easier -- reboot computer in safe mode
Do that by shutting down comuter. Restart and keep pressin F8 (before the windows logo comes on) chose "safe mode" from the menu. Once in safe mode try the "add/remove" thing again. Never use a spywares uninstall... it's a trick and not really an uninstall.

If that doesn't work go to www.downloads.com (not in safe mode). download add-aware and spybot. Install them. Make sure the updates are done. Then reboot in safe mode. Run them.

If that doesn't work let us know! WOuld also help if we knew the name of the spyware and any error messages.

Thus sayeth the computer nerd-boyfriend.

Good lunck!

Word of caution about downloading more stuff... the spyware is what got you into this mess to begin with.

Didn't you say this all started with spyware??

I don't know if downloading more would be a good idea or not.

Ummm Badgirl its been my experience that add-ware isn't always a good thing to have in your computer....messes mine up all the time. We use a heavty security system to keep add-ware OUT.

Just my 2 cents here.

Well as I said...I'm using a different computer now since mine will NOT connect to broadband.

So trying to download anything is not possible. Not that I want anymore of that kind of thing.

I just need to figure out how to find out what drivers got deleted and how to restore them.

Try going to help/support and searching drivers. It will tell you how to get to the device manager. From there you should be able to repair the missing/broken ones. Good luck

Hey Tammy,

As I said... I, peronally, haven't a clue. However, my bf is pretty good with these things, and I was passing on his advice.

Seemed cheaper than going to get it fixed.

Anyhow, Shylah, good luck!

Hi all! I've been busy and missed out on all this fun. Darn.

Anyway, Shylah, in order to help you, I need to know the specifics about your operating system. I can't begin to give you the specific instructions you're going to need to fix this without that. Sorry, about that, but I can give you some general suggestions that might give you a place to start.

Btw, I think the above misunderstanding comes from passing on advice from another party by word of mouth, it can get confusing. Ad-aware and Spybot are the names of specific programs that you can use to find and get rid of adware, spyware, and other security threats. I think we need to focus on getting the drivers reinstalled first though.

Also, the problem with Ad-aware is that it adds an updater which stays on and works on it's own. Which can be a problem for people who want things taken off their computer, not added. Also, the free version isn't a complete solution. If your computer has been compromised already, that alone is proof that you need to beef up your security so you need to find a serious security solution.

For now, if you want to reinstall your drivers first so you can access some online scans to get rid of your spyware, I have some questions. Did you save any of the disks that came with your computer? Have you done any backups? Have you gone to your computer manufacturer's website? If you know what drivers are missing (modem drives?), you might be able to find downloadable copies on their site.

And before you remind me you can't access the internet from that computer, you are able to connect on another right? Does that computer have a way of writing to a disk of some kind that you can use to transfer the files you download? If so, you can copy what you need on that computer and transfer it to the computer that needs it. If not, do you have a friend who can do that for you?

If you can reinstall your modem driver and access the net, I have a suggestion. Try trendmicro.com which has a couple of free programs (Housecall and Hijackthis) you can use to try and find your original problem and eliminate it. They're good at finding threats and you can use them as needed.

Have I lost you yet? Email me if you can and I'll see what else I can come up with.

Thanks everyone for your help. We are still trying.

Bethie I will send you an email this weekend about what happened in detail. Right now I'm getting the house ready for some guests.

And to everyone else that I need to answer your emails...I will get to you I promise!

I want to get this fixed ASAP and will take the time to get you all answered when I'm not having to be domestic and clean and all that yucky stuff.

Ok...here is a little bit of info

The program we used for spyware was SpyBot. When I ran it...it wanted an update so I did that thinking I was being smart...ha!

As it was cleaning out the stuff...little windows came up saying some stuff was changed and did I want to allow it. We didn't know what that meant so trusting the program (big mistake I think) we allowed the changes. THAT'S when things went bad.

Well the good news is Spybot is a legit piece of software, assuming it really is Spybot you have and not some phished version with problems...

I will try and google issues with it and see if there are any known problems killing connectivity and if there are easy fixes....

Hey Shylah?

What version of Windows are you using? Apparently in Vista these questions are legit. Not in other versions.

:-(

I have all my fingers and toes crossed for you.
