This is pretty scary. Follow the instructions and see who is around you.

Know who your neighbors are. Okay, here's the deal... enter your address... it will show a "house", that's yours... all the little colored boxes are Sex Offenders... click on them and you get a name & picture of the person along with his crime... pretty amazing and scary... Pass this on to your friends and family! .

It's better to look and be informed than to sit and wonder.

Quite a few in my neighborhood. Not all that surprising.... Not much surprises me anymore, though, after working in the public schools....

I found the site quite informative and revealing. I would like to also caution those checking the list not to completely judge by a quick view though. Think about it...if you were caught "playing" (exposed and having spanking fun)in your car, at the park, with your spouse, you too might be on this list. There are some sites that list the specific offense. How about the case of a 21 year old, in a relationship with a 16 year old. That 21 yr. old may also make the list, in some states. Crime yes, but sex offender??????

Don't get me wrong though, I'm not defending "sex offenders"...but rather saying it's also important to consider the crime.

Yeah, I did note that when I looked closer. A lot of the ones in my city were statutory rape cases, I mean, a lot of times, those aren't so much rape, it's more, like you said, 16 or 17 year olds with early 20-somethings. That's not really rape. But, there are attempted (or successful) rapes, a good amount of sexual battery, child pornography.

It's certainly enlightening as to the EXTENT of sex offenders (and those are just the convicted ones).

...but what exactly is aggravated prostitution? That's the odd one I found.

I searched online, and it appears the language of the law differes a little from state to state.

Here's one section of law, from TN (in legal speak without the footnotes copied):

For you to find the defendant guilty of this offense, the state must have proven beyond a reasonable doubt the existence of the following essential elements:1
(1)(a) that the defendant engaged in sexual activity as a business;

or
(b) that the defendant was an inmate in a house of prostitution;

or
(c) that the defendant loitered in a public place for the purpose of

being hired to engage in sexual activity;

and
(2) that the defendant was infected with HIV;

and

(3) that the defendant acted knowingly.

"HIV" means the human immunodeficiency virus or any other identified causative agent of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.2

"Sexual activity" means any sexual relations, including homosexual sexual relations.3

["Inmate" means a person who engages in prostitution in or through the agency of a house of prostitution.]4

["House of prostitution" means any place where prostitution or the promotion of prostitution is regularly carried on by one (1) or more persons under the control, management or supervision of another.]5

["Prostitution" means engaging in, or offering to engage in, sexual activity as a business or being an inmate in a house of prostitution or loitering in a public place for the purpose of being hired to engage in sexual activity.]6

"Knowingly" means that a person acts knowingly with respect to the conduct or to circumstances surrounding the conduct when the person is aware of the nature of the conduct or that the circumstances exist. A person acts knowingly with respect to a result of the person's conduct when the person is aware that the conduct is reasonably certain to cause the result.7

The requirement of "knowingly" is also established if it is shown that the defendant acted intentionally.

"Intentionally" means that a person acts intentionally with respect to the nature of the conduct or to a result of the conduct when it is the person's conscious objective or desire to engage in the conduct or cause the result.

I thought perhaps "aggravated prostitution" might be having sex with a bitchy and irritated prostitute!

If you are not sure of the nature of the conviction of a certian person, you can go to the court house and request the information on that person. It is all public record and you have the right to see it. Then you can determine for yourself if it was a male over 18 or female over 18 engaging in a relationship with a male or female under 18, therefore it being classified as statutory rape. The same applies for anyone convicted for indecent exposure...was it intentional or were they caught having some sexual fun with a willing partner?

As I stated, all is Public Record and you have the right to read all the documents related to the case.

You also have the right to contact the local authorities and ask point blank what they were originally arrested and charged for.

I worked as a Certified Paralegal for 20 years before I came to the UK. Researching court records was a daily task for me. The only time you cannot see a persons record is when that person is a juvenile. Those records are closed and remain closed forever, even when the person becomes adult age, to public view unless the juvenile was deemed to be tried as an adult.

So if you have any questions or reservations about a persons conviction, you DO have the right to check it out for yourself. You DO have the right to contact the arresting authority to get the information.
Take my heart and soul. But please don't step on it, it breaks easily.

I was actually suprised that one man wasn't on there. I know that he lives on my street and he sexualy offended my friend. I was very upset that he was not marked down. I know he has served 3 years in prison and he is on parol right now. I wonder why he didn't make the list.
I'm just a little angel...sometimes!

Maybe that's not what his conviction was for?

Some states don't require them to register. I know my roommate was shocked to see Little Rock (her hometown) free of offenders until she saw AR wasn't on the list ^^;

Though I am generally for a small federal government and believe strongly in states rights, this is one area IMHO where the feds need to be more involved. Registration should be mandatory in all states and the feds should have an online searchable database for both law enforcement and the general public. Furthermore if the offense has anything to do with a child, there should be federal minimum sentencing guidlines. When it comes to protecting our children, many of the states and the lame judges that sit on their benches just don't seem to care for the children as much as the offender. This is not only sad but but completely unacceptable !

Just my two cents !

Well but "a child" could mean a 17 year old who turns 18 in a month with her 18 year old boyfriend who just happened to get a little randy and daddy took offense at the deflowering of his perfectly consenting little darling.

It's a case by case thing.
