question for cat folks....

I've talked about my BabyKitty (looks just like Shylah's cat, and about 7 months old), and my other outdoor one, Fizzy (maybe 4-5 yrs), that lives a life of his own (he comes by to eat once in a while). Both are strays. BabyKitty's been in the house now, full time for over two months though, and I don't let her out.

Today I thought I'd take another stray in. She beautiful, and when I first saw her, I thought if she's a girl (cause I didn't look the first time I say her), I'd take her in too...to keep BabyKitty company.

BabyKitty pushes my Fizzy around, when he comes in. She's the Domme Kitty of the house, sort of telling him where to go all the time.

The new cat was eating outside, when I noticed one side of her whiskers are seared off. Not like they were pulled off in a fight...more like burned off in a fire, or something. They're crinkly sort of, like cut and smushed. Anyway, I thought this was a good time to bring her into the house. She's precious and cuddly, and very warm in her personality.

BabyKitty is warm in her personality too...until another cat comes in the house apparently.

OMG, BabyKitty became the bitch kitty from hell, and attacked this poor thing, like she wanted to kill it. She never did this to Fizzy...ever.

So I'm wondering...can two strays get used to one another...to live in the same house? Maybe it was the invasion of her territory that got her riled up.

Has anyone had this experience, trying to get two stray cats to be friendly.

I've always had dogs, and never worried about them much, cause they used to get tired of fighting, and rarely hurt one another when they first met. I also had room for them to have their own spaces.

Cats with the teeth and claws....it's scary.

BabyKitty did scratch one dog's eye the other week, when the dog came into her room. I'm working with them to get her comfortable, and so far, so good. She's seeing that they won't hurt her...and she's not attacking them.

Can I get her to be nice to other cats or should I not try again? Maybe it's 'cause they're both females???????

I don't know that much about cats...but I do know the few times I had more then one female cat it didn't work out very well. It seemed like there was always one mean and one scared. I thought it was a female thing. If you really want to keep the cats I would try again slowly maybe get them used to each other.

Wish I could be of more help...let me know how it goes.

I don't think they'll hurt each other seriously, you'll just have some catfighting for a bit until they get used to one another ^^;.

I'm still having a hard time thinking that my BabyKitty was soooooo mean. I'm looking at her a bit differently now, knowing how mean she can be. She was so sweet.

she,s just being territorial because she was the first one there she,s feeling put out ideally they should have been introduced slowly like thru a glass door she will settle down but it will take time just make sure u give her as much attention as u give the other one the new cat will eventually know whose boss and try and stay out of her way but they will tolerate each other if not being the best of friends.have they both been spayed? if not wen they r they will settle a lot quicker and become more freindly toward each other hope this helps oh and by the way she is beautiful

Yes K, its because their both females. And if the outside cat is unneutered and Baby is, she would feel even more threatened by her. Usually the neutered animal is submissive to the unneutered one, but this is Baby's territory and she's protecting it.

When bringing a new cat into your house, keep her in a seperate room for a week or two. Make sure the 2 cats can smell each other under the door. It's the strange, wild odor on the new cat thats bothering Baby as well. After a week or two she will smell like your house, and Baby will have become used to her. Then you can let the new cat out for short time periods until you see how their getting along.

I hope that if you cant make the 2 cats get along that you wont abandon the outside female. There are a lot of non-profit organizations who are no kill and would spay her, get her the shots she needs and find her a new home. She sounds really sweet.

Thanks for the advice.

The two have "seen" each other through the window plenty. I put a bed in the window, and worked the window treatments around BabyKitty (BK), so she watches my squirrels come to feed too. Fizzy even plays with the squirrels. It's really a site to see them together. (I have photos of the squirrel and cat, but on the other computer. Oh and the REALLY hilarious thing is when the cardinals and robins take exception to cats being around.)

BK's actually the second cat in the house, with the male, Fizzy, being first, but he doesn't "stay" in the house. They pretty much ignore one another, athough BitchKitty...er, I mean BabyKitty is the boss.

Since they are ALL strays, I have to be sure they are going to stick around, before I invest in each of them. The vet's office has given me a price of $175-200 each to get started. I can't invest in the cats, if they are going to take off, or if they might belong to someone else.

Fizzy takes off too much, for me to say he's really mine, and since he's gone for 3-5 days sometimes, I have suspect he has a home somewhere else. I hate to have him taken care of, to find he's got owners. I don't know if I'd be PO'd or grateful if someone did THAT to MY cat.

BabyKitty will be fixed when I start working again.

I won't abandon them. Food and water outside, as well as several shelters. If anything, I'll find her a home. I'm already trying to talk my dad into taking her. He's seen her, and thought she was adorable too.

Damn animals. I'm such a sucker when it comes to them.

They really "are" sweet!

That seems like a really high price K, when your trying to do the right thing. When I adopted Finn they charged me only $100 for his neutering, due next week. There are so many groups out there willing to help with these problems, including the ASPCA. I'm just worried that the two females will get pregnant before you can get them fixed....and the male is loose out there making kittens every chance he gets.

I understand your financial problems, I just wish I could help.

Ok, the answer is "no." You have one too many cats in the house, and you are not doing them a favor. Have the new one adopted, or go to your local ASPCA or shelter for advice.

I had a neighbor across the alley that feed stray cats for about a year. It created a complete hazard for the entire area, so I'm well aware of the possibilities. I'm a responsible pet owner. In fact, I think BK is probably from that batch.

Until I know for sure the cats don't belong to anyone...I can't just shelter them.

Our local shelter has killed EVERY single animal I took in to "rescue" (with the exception of a wild turkey that made it's home in my backyard - a VERY unusual thing, in that I live in Detroit). One dog I worked with every day at the shelter, and even got someone to adopt her, and they put her down after she snapped at the vet, two weeks after she got there. What...did she all of a sudden become a wild animal? I asked, "wouldn't you snap at someone that stuck something up your butt?" I won't deal with them now, unless it's only for "lost" animals...not "found." I would NEVER trust them for anything like placement again. The person that was going to adopt the dog was shocked as well. (Although, since it was a pure breed Rott, I'm thinking someone probably wanted her, and they gave her to someone else. At least I'm hoping that's what happened. She was a good dog, in spite of how her former owner's treated her.) I did find a dog, almost frozen in the snow last year, that they came to get, but other than that, I haven't dealt with them in over five years. Just don't trust them to care for the healthy and adoptable animals.

I did hear from a neighbor that went to the vet, next door to the shelter, and they got the surgery for only the price of the initial shots. It's worth a try, after I figure IF they belong to anyone.

I don't blame you K. I don't trust "shelters" either. I visited the one in the town I lived in Oklahoma. I couldn't stand it. The smell and the animals would have been better off on their own! I asked them why it was in such bad shape and they "informed" me that it was one of the best! If that is the "best", I'll take care of strays myself until I find them homes. I have a soft spot for animals and feel so angry when I see neglect or cruelty.

You just go on doing what you are doing. But keep them seperated for a couple of weeks to get accoustomed to the heirachy in the house. I was lucky with my dog and cat...they like each other and are even affectionate with each other. The cat just gives the dog a slap when she gets tired of being mauled.
Take my heart and soul. But please don't step on it, it breaks easily.

Ftop, there are a couple of things I want to mention that I think might be helpful.
The first is just to point out that diseases are rampant among feral cats. These diseases can be very fatal and highly contagious. If u have a cat that comes and goes in an area with alot of strays, thats going to increase the chances of disease coming into the picture for your cats.

Secondly, we have a cat who was the sweetest cat imaginable to us for over 10 years. We used to really just be amazed that this cat could be so sweet and affectionate and she was like that for many years.
About a year ago we got some new kittens and this same nice cat became totally hostile and her whole demeanor changed permanently.
Cats have kind of a bizaare psychology imo, for example they are famous for displaced aggression and being extrememly territorial and contact with humans and attention from humans is something I think domesticated cats covet like a resource. Our mature adult cat became intensely territorial to these powerless kittens, she never accepted them over the course of almost a year she got aggressive and irritated every time they were near and she searched for them relentlessly everywhere trying to enforce her territorial dominance over the entire house.
In my oppinion this heightened stressful state for a proglonged period also took a toll on her health and general well being. We seperated her permanently from them and she has reverted in many ways back to her old self.
Anyway this post is really long but hopefully helpful, good luck
I chose the road less traveled. Now where the hell am I?

I have spent my whole life working in the pet industry, and I'm going to have to stick up for the shelters. Its very easy to say that shelters smell, the animals are confined and they kill animals...but thats taking a very narrow view of the whole.

Town animal shelters are given the mouses share of most town's budgets, so they try to do a lot with very little. The kennels and catteries are overcrowded and understaffed, so keeping up with cleaning and feeding is constant. You can disinfect concrete, but the smell never really goes away from hundreds to thousands of animals a year. And just when you think everything is good, 1 uneutered Tomcat can make the whole place stink to high heaven with 1 spray. Every state is different, but most have a 7 day policy to keep animals before they are allowed to euthanise or adopt out. I know many shelters who go way past an animals time hoping that someone, anyone will come and give them a home. Meanwhile, animals are backing up outside the door, needing a place to stay.

Think their better off being hit by cars, shot at by farmers and hunters, poisoned or starving to death? Causing car accidents, killing other animals, getting into dog fights and having multiple litters? Sorry, I dont agree. :-(

We have a horrible problem in this country with stray, feral and unwanted pets, and very little manpower and funds to help. Between town/city shelters and the ASPCA they just cant cope. Thankfully there are also concerned citizens who start shelters and non-profit rescue organizations of their own, taking some of the burden upon themselves.

I was a town Dog Warden for years, it's a thankless job that can keep you going 24/7. Ive had people call my home at 3 am to complain about their neighbors dog barking, call my parents to tell them what a bitch I was for writing them a ticket for the 30th time...I even had a man attack me in the kennel one day after I'd scraped one of his dogs off the pavement and taken it to the vet instead of let it die. I used my own money sometimes to buy "extra's" like dog biscuits and blankets, dealt with possibly rabid wildlife and cried every time I had to have a healthy animal euthanised...usually after keeping them months and changing their names every week so the state wouldnt figure out what I was up to.

Unless you've been there, you dont know how desperate of a situation it can be. So the next time you have old towels, blankets, bowls, leashes and collars, even newspapers...drop them off at your local shelter. Or get a few extra cans of food or a box of biscuits or treats for them...I guarantee they'll be grateful.

I'll get off my soap box now. I dont mean to rant, but animals have been my whole life and I love them.
If you live to be a hundred, I want to live to be a hundred minus one day, so I never have to live without you.

Grow old with me, the best is yet to be.

Everyone's entitled to jump on a soap box.

I stand by my opinion of the shelter near my home. I've taken to using the Human Society now. They are more professional and proficient in the services they provide, in spite of the local place getting plenty of donations from the area.

I'll agree all shelters are not alike, and most almost always need donations. The one here continues to get healthy donations, yet their care continues to slide downward. All the donations in the world won't cure poor management.

Not neccesarily Tammy, how many doctors are doctors because of the money? And a lot of the time people that began their jobs all "gung ho" and starry eyed about helping animals, can get burnt out after a few years. Its not an easy job.

I know it's hard for the ones that work in shelters to see the suffering of those poor animals.

A few weeks ago on one of the tv stations here, they showed a video to Paul and Heather McCartney of how some people in China are torturing dogs for their coats. They are crammed several into small cages and then some are skinned while they are still alive. The same goes for cats but they do it the most to dogs. I cried when I saw one poor dog being skinned alive, looking at the person doing it like..."what did I do?" I wish there was something that could be done to stop this. Paul and Heather both were appalled and he said he would never do another concert or appearance in China until they stop this horrible thing. I'm not sure the people in China will be heartbroken over that but at least it is SOME kind of protest. I just want to cry when I think of how those poor things are treated. The video on the tv only showed a small part but it was enough to make you grieve for them. It was just horrible.

Shylah, if I even begin to contemplate what goes on still in other countries I lose my mind. And as if that isnt bad enough, those people move to this country and expect to continue their barbaric treatment of animals here. It's why dog fighting and cockfighting are still so popular in this country. :-(

It's horrible isn't it? I can remember a trip to southern Oklahoma one year with my uncle, his future ex-wife, my hubby and myself for a craft fair. We sold cedar boxes the guys made. Some people came to our stall and wanted one to keep their spurs and stuff in for chicken fighting. They even said "yeah, we're chicken fighters!" like it was something to be proud of. We refused to sell to them. After that, our sales dropped to nothing. So we packed up and left and refused to attend that craft fair again. I'm against any type of cruelty to animals. I guess that's why my pets are so spoiled cos I heap all kinds of love and attention on them. I know they love me back tho.

We figuered out the name of my new little baby which I'll be getting in March - I can't wait. He is going to be a boy named Orpheus (Grk mythology in case anyone didn-t know,) and I can call him Orphy for short... I was also thinking Eben, like from Ebinezer Scrooge from 'A Christmas carol.' Aren't those names adorable... I can call him Ebbie - so cute!!!!

I love kittties and whn I got my first little one (a friend gave her to me from her litter,) and I got her at 4 and 1/2 weeks. I was lucky enough to be able to bottle feed her, which brought an unbeliable bond - as though she really thought of me as her momma. Does anyone know whre I got get a little angel who is still bottlefeeding? I would really like that mother/daughter bond again. Thanks!

Sorry Katie, but I think taking a kitten that young is wrong. You may have bonded strongly with your cat thru bottle feeding, but she was denied the socialization and training she deserved by continuing with her mother and siblings for another 3 weeks. Dont be surprised if she doesnt ever accept your new kitten, she will have forgotten what its like to interact with other felines.

And bottle formula is nowhere near as healthy as mothers milk, at least for cats.

Finn was 5 months old when I got him, and we have an extremely close bond. He sleeps with me, follows me from room to room, always wants to be in my lap and is desperately glad to see me when I come home. Im sorry if this is a downer and not what you wanted to hear...but its the opinion of a long time animal professional.

It could be that BK is just a punk. Benita, the 7th cat I ever had, is one. Took her about 6 months of isolation in my bedroom when I first brought her in before I could integrate her with my existing 3. Even then, she still punks up on everyone every chance she gets. I think she thinks it is fun.

My next cat, Nikki, was worse. She was in isolation for a year. Nikki is not a punk, she is just plain intolerant and mean. Once her tolerance level was raised, she's fine now. Needless to say, all the big rows in the house are between Nikki and Benita.

According to my vet, female cats are more territorial because they are responsible for protecting their litters. So it is the mothering instinct that makes them less tolerant of other females and more inclined to bitch slapping sessions with other females.

Needless to say, this makes my 3 male cats appear to be either gay or stoned. They never fight, could care less about spats between the girls and sleep together in one big fur pile all day long...
Alas, he was the Highwayman
The one who comes and goes
And only the Highway Woman
Keeps up with the likes of those...

I got my big kitty after he turned one. Someone abandoned him on the steps of Petsmart.... Anyway, he thinks I'm his mommy. He follows me around, never wants to be more than 5 feet away. He sleeps snuggled up against me all night, which makes me sweat... He thinks I hung the moon. All kitties are different.

I had friends who had to bottle feed their kitty because it was abandoned too young - and it is the most unfriendly, antisocial thing I've met.

I think a lot of it depends upon the owner, though, because all of my cats have been very sweet and affectionate. Or maybe I'm just lucky?

Anyway, I wouldn't worry too much about bonding with your kitty. If it happened last time it will most likely happen again.

I think rescued kitties are usually grateful that they finally have a good home, and show it by their devotion. :-)

I was careful when I picked Finn from the rest...I wanted an affectionate cat, so didnt go for one that was standoffish, shy or slightly feral. Finn was confident, playful and happy, and has become even more affectionate as time has gone by.

Im sure that whatever age your kitten is, he will be the apple of your eye.

Ziggy - my cats do that, too. I have a large male and a two-year-younger female. They're just playing. Usually the little kitty starts it, though, so I don't feel too sorry for her...

Thanks for the info and my baby follows me everywhere and is always on my lap, making it hard for me to type, LOL, but I could care less ecause she is my little angelface - I just want another one to love and hold and be a mommy to.
I'm sorry, but not as sorry as I'm gonna be.

Good to hear Ziggy and again, thank you all for your info. i just felt so connected bottle-feeding, litke i felt like a real momma, even though Sophie, who I got at 7 weeks and was not bottle-fed, thinks of me the same way, I just miss that feeling. I felt so warm and close holding Wickers in my arms and letting her nip a the bottle; i love waking up to her when she was hungry and feeding her, and just about everything that had to to with her.
I'm sorry, but not as sorry as I'm gonna be.

Katie, have you thought about volunteering at the pediatrics section of a hospital? They always need people to feed and cuddle the babies, especially the preemies. The babies need lots of love to thrive.

Wolfie - that's a great idea! I could probably only contribute one day a week with my busy schedule but I'd get to be with little babies that need care and love. I'll start my search when I get back from class tomorrow. Thanks Wolfie!
I'm sorry, but not as sorry as I'm gonna be.

If they are both female and not spayed they will fight for a while. Mine all did until Zoe showed the others just who the boss really was.

Cats are funny though, two spayed females or any combo as long as they are fixed will settle down nicely. Unfixed cats don't do as well.

Hope that helps!
